The 3 Essentials for the Perfect Self-Tape

When you're auditioning for an acting role, you want to make sure that your self-tape is the best it can be. This means having the proper set up to ensure there are no distractions within your control.

Here are the three essential things you need for the perfect self-tape:

  • A sturdy and bright ring light. A ring light is a great way to evenly light your face and create a professional look. I use the Aureday 14'' Selfie Ring Light with 62" Adjustable Tripod Stand & Phone Holder. This light is bright enough to light your face evenly, but not so bright that it's harsh. It also has a variety of brightness and color temperature settings so you can customize the look of your lighting.

  • A good backdrop. A plain backdrop is essential for self tapes. This will help to keep the focus on you and your performance, and it will also help to eliminate any distractions in the background. I use the Kate Collapsible Backdrop Pop-up Photo Backdrops. This backdrop is made of a durable fabric and it folds up for easy storage.

  • A video editing app. Once you've recorded your self-tape, you'll need to edit it to remove any unwanted noise or distractions.

  • I use the InShot app for Android. This app is easy to use and it has a variety of features that you can use to edit your self-tape.

In addition to these three essentials, there are a few other things you can do to improve your self-tape:

Find a quiet place to record where you won't be interrupted.

Dress in clothes that are appropriate for the role you're auditioning for.

Practice your lines beforehand so that you can deliver them confidently.

Slate your name and the role you're auditioning for at the beginning of the tape.

Impress casting directors with your professionalism!
